What is dark data? (And why you should care)

The amount of data generated every day is simply mind-boggling.

As of 2024, approximately 402.74 million terabytes of data are created each day, contributing to an annual total of around 149 zettabytes. This exponential growth is projected to continue, with global data generation expected to reach approximately 182 zettabytes in 2025.

These numbers might seem unreal.

Yet, the potential impact of this vast amount of data is very real for businesses that know how to harness it.

Unfortunately, a significant portion of this massive amount of data remains unprocessed and unused. This untapped data is more commonly referred to as “dark data.”

What is dark data?

Dark data refers to the vast amount of information an organization collects but does not process, organize, or use

This can include data such as old emails, call logs, sensor data, customer interactions, obsolete databases, document drafts, and outdated documents.

As you can imagine, the sheer volume of dark data can be hard to conceptualize. It is often ignored due to its complexity and lack of structure. Day after day, dark data remains stagnant while organizations continue to generate more and more.

Despite not being actively used, dark data is typically stored alongside operational data. Holding on to this dark data and failing to bring its potential to light can lead to several issues:

  • Missed insights: Valuable information woven into the data remains untapped, preventing businesses from making more informed decisions.
  • Security risks: Unused data can still contain sensitive information such as personally identifiable information (PII), proprietary details, or customer data, making organizations vulnerable to cyber threats and compliance violations.
  • Unnecessary storage costs: Although cloud storage has reduced the price of storing large amounts of data, hanging on to dark data consumes resources without delivering any return on investment.

Put simply, without proper planning and management, this dark data can quickly become a liability and a drag on productivity instead of an asset.

Why dark data matters

With the right tools and strategies, organizations can uncover and utilize insights hidden within dark data, helping them gain a competitive edge. Here are a few benefits of properly managed dark data:

  • Improved decision-making: Dark data may reveal patterns and trends that can help businesses to refine strategies, enhance customer experiences, and predict future outcomes.
  • Operational efficiency: Identifying redundant or obsolete data helps optimize storage and reduce operational costs. Similarly, dark data can provide insights into the development process of a product or service so it can be made more efficient in the future.
  • New revenue opportunities: Analyzing dark data can reveal new customer needs, market trends, operational improvements, and product opportunities that were previously overlooked.
  • Enhanced security and compliance: Properly managing dark data helps protect sensitive information and ensures organizations better adhere to data privacy regulations.

Unlocking dark data

Once your organization starts to look for dark data, you’ll likely realize it's more prevalent than you think.

Fortunately, the methods that can transform dark data from a liability into an asset may already be in place. Like with other data sets, organizations can:

  1. Establish processes to tag potential dark data: Create a tracking mechanism to inventory potential dark data and understand how it's generated.
  2. Identify and classify data: Conduct regular audits to determine what data exists, where it is stored, its potential sensitivity, and its possible value.
  3. Integrate dark data into analytics: Use technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to extract insights from unstructured data.
  4. Ensure proper governance and security measures: Establish data policies that enforce compliance, security, access control, and secure data purging, if needed.

Ignoring dark data means wasted resources, increased security risks, and lost opportunities.

Tap into the potential of your dark data

Organizations often seek new ways to operate more efficiently and effectively, especially with limited budgets and growing customer expectations.

Dark data — if properly harnessed — can accomplish both of these goals, providing a digital treasure trove of previously untapped potential. Woven into dark dark are insights that most businesses fail to utilize, but also risks that can drive up storage costs, security vulnerabilities, and compliance issues.

One of the best steps your organization can take is to utilize a media asset management (MAM) solution, like iconik, which can automate the process of transforming your dark data into usable, searchable assets. iconik integrates within your existing technology ecosystem, automatically analyzes and tags data, and organizes it quickly and effectively.
